Favorite Christmas cookie recipe passed down from parents

Christmas is a holiday that is full of traditions. One main tradition that is followed is that of desserts. Here are a couple that have been passed down through several generations.

Merry Christmas Bars

1 cup butter                                               

1 egg

¾ cup chopped red candied cherries         

½ tsp. almond extract

1 cup sugar                                                

2 cups flour

½ cup chopped holiday M&Ms                  

¼ tsp. salt

*Icing~ 1 cup powdered sugar, 5 tsp. warm water*

Beat together butter & sugar until light and fluffy; blend in egg and almond extract.  Add combined flour and salt. Stir in ½ cup chopped cherries. Spread dough in ungreased 151/2 x 10 ½ jelly roll pan. Sprinkle with remaining cherries and M&Ms. Combine powdered sugar and water until smooth to drizzle on right AFTER baking. Bake at 300 degrees F for 30-35 mins.

Cool completely in pan until cutting into bars.

Cheery Chocolate Kisses

1 cup butter, softened                                   

1 cup powdered sugar

2 t maraschino cherry juice

½ t almond extract

2 ¼ cups flour

½ tsp salt

½ cups Maraschino cherries (drained and chopped)

48 chocolate kisses

Combine butter, powdered sugar, cherry juice, almond extract; blend well. Stir in flour and salt. Add cherries. Mix well. Form dough into 1 inch balls. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees F for 8-10 mins. Immediately top each one with a kiss. Remove from cookie sheets. Yields 50-60-cookies.
